Culinary Boot Camp in Carpinteria

During the week of March 29, 2010, twenty four school food service staff from Southern Santa Barbara County attended our week long Culinary Boot Camp. Held at Carpinteria High School, the s'Cool Food Initiative's Culinary Boot Camp was presented to four Santa Barbara School Districts which included: Carpinteria, Goleta, Hope, and Santa Barbara.

This Boot Camp proved to be our most holistic training yet including daily waste management reports designed to demonstrate how much supposed "trash" can actually be recycled or composted. Food scraps were sent directly to the Carpinteria High School Organic Farm where Bill Palmisano gladly added them to his compost heaps. Boot Campers also enjoyed working in teams without instruction to prepare breakfast for the whole group of attendees and s'Cool Food team each morning. All in all, the week was a great success complete with Carpinteria produce being served to Carpinteria locals. Thanks to Food Service Supervisor Gerry Lopez, Kitchen Manager Arna Crittenden, and the entire Carpinteria staff for being such welcoming hosts during our week of training.
