Culinary Boot Camp in Goleta

During the weeks of June 15 - 26, 2009, school food service staff from six Santa Barbara County school districts attended our week long Culinary Boot Camp, held at the Goleta Union School District's Central Kitchen.  The following School Districts were represented:

Week 1: Carpinteria and Santa Barbara

Week 2: Blochman, Carpinteria, Goleta, Orcutt, and Santa Maria Bonita

For the first time, a farm visit was integrated into the week's lessons and activities.  Attendees visited the Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens, which is located just across the street from Goleta's Central Kitchen.  Members of the Orfalea Fund Board, as well as members of the Southern California Good Food Network, visited during the week to get a taste for the training, and of course, to sample a delicious school lunch a la Boot Campers. Aside from their regular classroom and kitchen lessons, Boot Camp Attendees also had a chance to view and discuss the film King Corn during Movie Night, and they relaxed and reflected on their accomplishments during a Graduation Reception held at the Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens. Special Thanks to the Goleta Union School District Staff and Administrators for their assistance during Boot Camp!
