Since 2007, s'Cool Food has set forward to work directly with school administration members, food service staff, teachers, parents, students, and community partners to promote scratch cooking in partnering school districts. - Culinary Boot Camp

The s'Cool Food Initiative runs week-long culinary training events called Culinary Boot Camps for food service staff across Santa Barbara County. Working directly with Chef Educators and their peers, attendees practice the skills required for integrating more scratch cooking techniques into their school kitchens.

- In-Service Culinary Support

With support from a s'Cool Food Chef Advisor, school food service workers receive hands-on support in integrating new recipes, more efficient production methods, and local ingredients into their programs. This culinary support is a follow-up to Culinary Boot Camp, and includes recipe development, menu planning, and continued instruction of institutional production methods.

- Jr. Chef Day

Jr. Chef Day is a dynamic event created to expose students to food through a school-wide cooking event. In the kitchen-classroom, each student has the chance to interact with seasonal vegetables using all five senses--from seeing raw produce like heirloom tomatoes and purple peppers all the way to tasting the delicious meal that they have contributed to.

In response to an increasing amount of funding requests for various projects related to food and gardens in schools throughout Santa Barbara County, the Orfalea Foundations decided to address the underlying issues surrounding school meals. The first step in determining their course of action was to conduct a comprehensive Needs Assessment of the county's schools.
